Resource Websites for Parents

 

 

 

K-12  

Choosing a School for Your Child  is offered by the US Department of Education as a type of "decision tool" that can help [parents] navigate the process of choosing a school. It explains some of the public school choices now available in many communities and covers private school options that may be available as well. 

Facts and Terms Every Parent Should Know About NCLB  by the US Department of Education gives facts and describes terms relating to the "No Child Left Behind" Act of 2002 (in English and Spanish).

Helping Your Child Succeed in School  from the Department of Education features things parents can do at home to help their children succeed in school. Includes specific activities to help children acquire the skills they need for school success.

Developing an Education Plan for Your Child  from the Consortium for Parent Information and Education provides a checklist to help parents organize and develop their own educational views, as a first step to choosing a school and educational program for their child.

Helping Children Succeed in School Online program from the Urban Programs Resource Network (Illinois Extension) has advice and strategies for helping children succeed in school. Includes sections on school stress, learning styles, study habits, test taking, grades, getting extra help, and parent-teacher communication

Career Planning Resources for Parents  provides information on Career Vision services for families, aimed at helping teens make decisions about education and careers. Includes some free information and resources for parents.

College Planning  

Getting Ready for College Early : Another guide from the Department of Education to help parents and students understand the steps they need to take during the middle and junior high school years to get ready for college.

College Toolkit :  Provided by Connect for Kids, this site has resources to help parents and high school students understand the college process. Includes a guide for parents, information for students who are preparing for college, links to online search engines that help you and your child select an appropriate college, tips for campus visits (in person or online), and information on paying for college.

College is Possible  This site by American Council on Education provides information to parents and students on preparing for college, choosing the right college, and paying for college.

Funding Education Beyond High School
The US Department of Education's guide to the three major forms of federal aid available through the Federal Student Aid Office: grants, loans and work-study. In English and Spanish. 


OTHER

Taking a Closer Look: A Guide to Online Resources on Family Involvement  from the Harvard Family Research Project is a comprehensive guide to online resources on family involvement in early childhood education, elementary, middle school, and high school. It includes family involvement in several contexts:, including home, school, and out-of-school time programs.  

American Federation of Teachers Parent Page includes wide array of topics, including academic standards, class size, reading, homework, school discipline, school safety and communicating with school staff 

Family Involvement Makes a Difference  This Harvard Family Research Project has several publications outlining the positive education outcomes achieved for students of all ages when parents are involved in their children's education
