The middle school was originally designed as a junior high school for grades seven and eight. Because administration is always exploring new ways to better the educational experience for Montour students, a 60-member committee was formed to research the concept of converting the junior high school into a middle school. A feasibility study and plans for extensive renovation were presented to the School Board, who approved the plans in the fall of 1997. Over eleven hundred students continue to reap the benefits of this state-of-the-art facility, which includes a new library, expanded cafeteria, new science labs, music rehearsal space, and wiring for computers in every room.

The middle school is divided into grade-level teams to create a school-within-a-school atmosphere and encourage closer student-teacher relationships. Common team planning helps instructors coordinate lessons that help students develop skills while nurturing their inquisitive tendencies. Students are sharing projects with their peers across the world via the internet, learning to speak several languages, practicing piloting skills via flight simulators, performing hands-on science experiments, and honing their horticultural skills. This cutting-edge educational environment encourages students to be curious and proactive and positions them as leaders for the next millennium.
