SNAP S tudent N utrition A ccountability P rogram Now there's an easier way for your child to purchase food in the cafeteria!
Doug Henderson, Food Service Director CAFETERIA NEWS The SNAP System can eliminate the need for you to send money to school on a daily basis to pay for food purchased in the cafeteria. The district has installed a computerized system in all of the school district cafeterias. How Does the SNAP System Work? · Every student will have an account in the cafeteria that can be accessed by their student PIN (Personal Identification Number) · At meal time, the student will enter their PIN # and the computer-will access the student's account. If there is money in the account, the purchase is deducted, eliminating the need for students to carry money to school with them every day. How do I put money into my child's account? · Students are encouraged to bring a check made payable to: · Students who choose not to use the SNAP system to purchase meals may still buy meals/snacks with cash. How do I know when to send more money? · At David E. and the High schools, the student is notified by the cashier when their account is below $3.00. Forest grove students will receive a low balance notice from the cashier. What if my child is eligible for free or reduced meals? · If your child is approved eligible for FREE meals, the computer will read the student's PIN, and not charge them for a full meal, and only charge the reduce child for a reduced price meal. If your free or reduced child wants to buy extra food or snack items you can put money on their account same as any other student. · The cashier will not necessarily know that the student is eligible for Free or Reduced meals. What can my child purchase with the account? · Students can purchase any food item in the cafeteria just as they have in the past-full meals or ala carte items. · Money in the student's account can only be used for cafeteria purchases.
What if my child doesn't use all the money in the account? Any left over money in a student's account can be left in their account until the following year or refunded if the student leaves the district. THE BENEFITS: 1. You know where your money is going. 2. Only food items can be purchased. 3. You don't have to hassle with spare change each day. 4. Eliminates overt Identification of the free or reduced students! 5. Since less cash is handled, cashier lines will move faster. 6. Keeps track of each student's meal history of what they have purchased for parent inquiries. 7. Student balance is available upon request.
WHAT DO YOU DO? · It's easy! Your student already has an account. Their PIN number is the same as their student number that they use to access the school district computer network. · At any breakfast or lunch, students can make a deposit into their account. In an envelope, please send in a check for the amount you wish to debit into your child's account and give to the cashier. · At lunch time, your child will enter the line as they have in the past and make their selection from the food items offered on a daily basis. · At the end of the line your child will enter their PIN into a simple PIN pad device. · If the student has sufficient money in their account they will proceed into the dining room. If they are paying on cash basis daily, they will be asked for the amount due. MORE BENEFITS · Students do not have to handle dirty money before they eat lunch. · Once the system starts, it is actually faster to use it than to do a cash transaction. · No need to carry cash on a daily basis. It is often misplaced or lost.
